all about IOTA, with Christian Saur

This bear market is not IOTA’s first rodeo.

“Blockchainless blockchain” is no golden goose in the cryptocurrency world, old and wise enough to capitalize on its latest crypto winter experiment after the euphoria of 2017.

This week on the CoinJournal podcast, I spoke with IOTA’s Christian Saur about all things IOTA, as well as the cryptocurrency market in general.

There was a lot to talk about. Investors may remember IOTA’s massive run-up in 2017, and it was one of the few tokens that survived the subsequent bear market without eclipsing the highs of the last bull market, during the COVID pandemic.

But more than anything, it just highlights how rampant speculation was at the time, with Christian making some interesting points about IOTA’s lack of meaningful utility and development since then – similar to what we’ve seen with many of the larger cryptocurrencies.

And DeFi – IOTA is making real efforts to strengthen its presence in the space. One of the things I always stress to people in my analysis is the fact that in the recent contagion that swept through the cryptocurrency markets, DeFi behaved exactly as expected. The bad actors, such as Celsius, Three Arrows Capital and others, were DeFi companies.

DeFi did exactly what it promised: settlements occurred on time, as coded, and the blockchain did not lie. Nothing failed; nothing broke. Sure, maybe Terra can be counted as DeFi, but that was through a flawed model rather than problems with DeFi itself. We discuss these events and DeFi’s reaction.

It was fun to talk about it with a coin that has been around for so long and has seen it all. Does it offer investors greater certainty?

Last month saw the launch of the Shimmer network, likened by Christian to a sort of “what Kusama is to Polkadot” version of IOTA. It was also nice to hear that the launch was fair, without a large portion of the tokens going to insiders, unlike what has happened with many projects lately.

We focus on what it means to launch such a major upgrade in a bear market devoid of almost any bullish sentiment. We also get into the ins and outs of what exactly this is and what it means for IOTA going forward.

Finally, it’s always nice to hear about personal journeys into cryptocurrency. Christian tells me how he first came across IOTA, and decided to jump right into the cryptocurrency rabbit hole.
